|Item or Series Title||Hill Collection|
Maynard and Margaret Hill lived in the Lansing area for most their lives and nearly all of the twentieth century. Maynard worked at the Lansing State Journal for the greater part of his life as a contributor and editor. A significant amount of this collection is composed of these journalistic endeavors: his notes and correspondence on stories he wrote, as well as the majority of clippings from his newspaper columns "Learning to Fly" and 'Looking in on State Affairs."
While Maynard worked for the State Journal, Margaret taught music in the Lansing school district for a large part of her life. Collected here are her degrees from Michigan State University and some of her lesson plans.
Maynard had an exceptional military career, which is evident in the collection, containing thing such as his army scrapbook, military pamphlets, and even some of his spare bullets. All this and other memorabilia from his time serving his country.
There is also a wealth of material from the Hills' time at the historic Shagbark Estate, built by Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Howard Wiest. The material includes photographs, financial papers, and personal correspondence with the Shagbark emblem.
